Near Piazzale della Macina was Borog dal Romei, now borgo Ronchini, so called because this is where they sold bran – romei in Parmesan dialect – and flours.
From via Mameli one can also see piazzale della Steccata, once called Piazza delle Ortolane because, starting in the second half of the 19th century, this is where they held the twice weekly vegetables market. The stalls area was marked by brick squares edged with pink granite and the spaces were allocated by the city with great precision. Half of the space was taken by stalls selling the produce from the city’s vegetable gardens, first of all those of the Court.
